(Frankfort, Ky) Kentucky Adult Education, a unit of the Council on Postsecondary Education, announced today that adult education programs in 75 Kentucky counties met or exceeded their enrollment and performance goals in fiscal year 2003 and will share $879,555 in reward funds to be distributed in fiscal year 2004.
The adult education accountability system is in its third year. To qualify for rewards, programs must meet enrollment and performance goals. The federal performance rewards range from 5-10 percent of the programs’ base funding.
Cheryl D. King, vice president for the Council on Postsecondary Education, said that a record high 109,800 Kentuckians enrolled in adult education programs last year, up from 86,413 the year before. Adult education includes family literacy, adult basic education, GED preparation, workforce education, corrections education, and English as a second language.
“Kentucky is making significant progress toward improving the educational attainment level of adult Kentuckians who do not have a high school diploma, who function at low levels of literacy, who want to learn the English language, and who want to go to college,” King said.
