Strengthening Kentucky’s Human Services Workforce Through Postsecondary Collaboration

The Kentucky Council on Postsecondary Education (CPE), in collaboration with the Kentucky Department for Community-Based Services (DCBS), is advancing efforts to build a more stable, skilled, and committed human services workforce. Through a statewide partnership with select postsecondary institutions, this initiative helps recruit and prepare students for public service careers that directly support Kentucky’s children, families, and communities. In addition, it provides introductory and ongoing training for all DCBS employees to enhance the delivery of critical services to Kentucky families.
By aligning academic programs with real-world workforce needs, this partnership creates structured pathways into DCBS careers—offering internships, targeted advising, and customized learning opportunities for students.
Postsecondary Education Partners
CPE is proud to support the following institutions in their work with DCBS:
- Brescia University: Brescia’s School of Social Work has a longstanding commitment to community-based education rooted in Catholic values and service. Through this partnership, Brescia offers flexible pathways—including fully online BSW and MSW programs—for students preparing for careers in child welfare and public service.
- Northern Kentucky University (NKU): NKU’s School of Social Work prepares students to succeed in trauma-informed, public-sector roles. NKU supports DCBS workforce development through student recruitment, field placements, and career pipelines tailored to regional needs.
- Morehead State University (MSU): Through the DCBS partnership, MSU engages students in evidence-based practices alongside expert faculty and peers. MSU offers both BSW and MSW programs in a hybrid format (online and in-person), preparing students for careers in clinical social work, public health, and substance use recovery.
