Upcoming webinar to launch new dual credit toolkit for Kentucky educators

April 18, 2023

Toolkit provides information about dual credit and other early postsecondary programs, state policy and the new dual credit attainment goal

Kentucky education partners will unveil the state’s new dual credit toolkit during a webinar at 10 a.m. ET Thursday, April 20. Registration for the webinar is available on the Kentucky Council on Postsecondary Education’s website.

The Early Postsecondary Opportunities toolkit will support practitioners’ efforts to expand dual credit programs to underserved students and improve the overall dual credit experience. Education leaders will discuss the rationale for the policy and overview the resources included in the toolkit.

Featured speakers include Dr. Aaron Thompson and Dr. Amanda Ellis, Kentucky Council on Postsecondary Education; Dr. Beth Hargis, Kentucky Department of Education; Harmony Little, Kentucky Community and Technical College System; and Alex Perry, College in High School Alliance.

The webinar is a culmination of recent efforts by the Council to strengthen the effectiveness of dual credit programs, which provide opportunities for students to earn college credit while still in high school.

“When students are successful in dual credit courses, they have tangible proof they can complete college-level coursework,” said CPE President Aaron Thompson. “These programs are effective, affordable resources that can boost our college-going rates, especially for low-income and underrepresented minority students."

At its March meeting, the Council approved revisions to Kentucky’s dual credit policy, which guides both high schools and higher education institutions on dual credit programs in the state. Among the amendments approved by the Council was the addition of a dual credit attainment goal. By 2030, 50% of Kentucky high school students should graduate high school having completed at least one dual credit course with a qualifying grade of a C or higher.
